Chapter 3: The God Most High
(We will be diving through this chapter for the next several weeks.)

Review from last week: ElohimEl means mighty or strong and him is a plural ending indicating more than one. This is the name of God as Creator.

*El Elyon- Most High, sovereign, ruler of all the universe.
El means mighty or strong. Then you see that this is repeated in Elyon. So it would translate "Strong Strong One".
Elyon by itself just means "high"- height of objects, prominence of people, etc.
       Deut. 28:1  “And if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth.
There are people who are set on high, above us (ex: President). But, He is higher, above all. Most high. There is no one like Him.

*Journaling: Who makes the decision in your life? What effects your decision?
Isaiah 14:12-15
12 “How you are fallen from heaven,
   O Day Star, son of Dawn!
How you are cut down to the ground,
   you who laid the nations low!
13 You said in your heart,
   ‘I will ascend to heaven;
above the stars of God
   I will set my throne on high;
I will sit on the mount of assembly
   in the far reaches of the north;

14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds;
   I will make myself like the Most High.’
15 But you are brought down to Sheol,
   to the far reaches of the pit.

This passage is about Satan. He was intially very high in rank. It was said that Lucifer was actually so beautiful. But you can see his heart so clearly in this passage. 5 times does he say "I will...."
How many times do we want to be like the Most High? Who makes the decisions in your life? You or El Elyon?

God is a God of order. When we take a look at the world, it's chaos! When God is in his rightful place in our lives, then EVERYTHING WILL FALL INTO PLACE.

*Reviewing questions on pages 22 and 23.
Job 1:6-12
6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan[a] also came among them. 7 The LORD said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the LORD and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.” 8 And the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?” 9 Then Satan answered the LORD and said, “Does Job fear God for no reason? 10 Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11 But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face.” 12 And the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand.” So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.

1. Who instigated the conversation about Job?
    God.
(God and Satan are not enemies. Satan is underneath God. Satan's enemy is....us. That' why he comes to attack us, not God. But the enemy has NO power over us.)

2. What did Satan think Job's reasons were for fearing God?
    All the blessing that God gave him and all the things He did for him. Becuase he had a easy life, of course, he was going to love God.

3. How do you think Satan knew there was a hedge about Job?
    Satan couldn't touch Job due to the hedge. He had to go to God first. A hedge is a layer of protection. God's grace abundant in his life. When God pulls back His grace, we can then experience what others go through without His grace. We can appreciate God's sovereignty.

4. Apparently what did the hedge do?
    Refer to #3.

5. What did Satan suggest God do to Job and why?
     Take the hedge away- but God already knew what was going to happen.
1 Corinthians 10:13 -  No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
God allows us to be tempted. Through these tests, we can see where our hearts are. Sometimes we think we're fine, but really we're not.

6.  What was God's response?
      He said yes. But Satan could not touch him.

7. Who was in Control, Satan or God? How do you know?
      God is in control. He is the one that brought Job up in the conversation and then "gave" Job over to Satan. If you see the #6, God made the rule: Satan could not touch him. God was in control over the entire conversation.
