Wonmin's Notes El Elyon Sheet Please share the many nuggets of wisdom that you all shared last week.

El Elyon
Sovereign Ruler of the Universe, King of all kings

How is He sovereign?
What is He sovereign over?
What difference does it make?
Daniel 4:34-35 At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored him who lives forever, for his dominion is an everlasting dominion,  and his kingdom endures from generation to generation; 35 all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, “What have you done?”
His dominion is an everlasting dominion, his kingdom endures forever

He does according to his will in heaven and earth

His will is final and His authority and power is IT
All the inhabitants of heaven and earth (vs. 35)

Everything – Eternal Supreme Authority (dominion is everlasting)

God does his will both
In heaven and on earth
(nothing is outside of his authority)
No one can thwart His will
No one can question what he does
To know the Sovereign God is to find peace in the problems and pressures of daily living.  He is free from all external controls and other controlling influences

Job 1–2
Even Satan answers to Him
Every being everything
We learn the lesson of trust
in the school of trial.
Fiery trials perfect our faith.
Isaiah 14:24-27 The LORD of hosts has sworn: “As I have planned, so shall it be, and as I have purposed, so shall it stand, 25 that I will break the Assyrian in my land, and on my mountains trample him underfoot; and his yoke shall depart from them, and his burden from their shoulder.”26 This is the purpose that is purposed concerning the whole earth, and this is the hand that is stretched out over all the nations. 27 For the LORD of hosts has purposed, and who will annul it? His hand is stretched out, and who will turn it back?
Context: God as a reflection of His sovereignty over nations, predicts the destruction of Judah's enemy Assyria in Is 14:25,26
What God intends will happen
 What He plans will stand
No one can frustrate His plans
No one can turn back His hand
*Removes yokes and burdens (vs 25)

Enemies and even their plans against me

Jeremiah 29:11 – No one can undo this promise that God is in control of my present and my future
WE ARE NOT VICTIMS OF CHANCE OR FATE OR LUCK
God is greater than my biggest problems
My enemies can’t do anything to me outside of God’s permission

Isaiah 46:9-11 remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, 10 declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall standand I will accomplish all my purpose,’ 11 calling a bird of prey from the east, the man of my counsel from a far country. I have spoken, and I will bring it to pass; I have purposed, and I will do it.
Remembers all former things
There is none like Him
Declares things from even ancient of days, beginning to end his counsel stands and He accomplishes all His purposes
Every purpose he has from the beginning of time to the end
Every purpose and plan

Declares, Speaks, Counsels, Brings to pass, DOES IT.
My counsel is limited
God’s counsel is unlimited
His knowledge of what was, is and will be is limitless…He sees all and plans with that knowledge of being all knowing
Daniel 2:20-23 Daniel answered and said:“Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, to whom belong wisdom and might. 21 He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding; 22 he reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with him. 23 To you, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, for you have given me wisdom and might, and have now made known to me what we asked of you, for you have made known to us the king's matter.”

Context: Upon receiving the answer to his prayer for the interpretation of the King's dream, Daniel praises God for His sovereignty over all things whether they be epochs (a particular period of time marked by distinctive features, events, etc.)  empires ( a group of people ruled by a sovereign
To Him Belong wisdom and might:               Changes, removes, reveals, knows, gives

Times & epochs (history)
Kings (rulers/governments)
Wisdom & knowledge
Hidden things
The darkness

He is in control of all of his-story
Every king or president etc..
Everything past has not been out of his control……….  Wow….  Every rise and fall of every kingdom has been by His hand

There have been no mistakes…
Isaiah 5:5-7 And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down. 6 I will make it a waste; it shall not be pruned or hoed, and briers and thorns shall grow up; I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. 7 For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are his pleasant planting; and he looked for justice, but behold, bloodshed; for righteousness, but behold, an outcry!

He puts hedges and takes away
Breaks down or builds up
Decides whether we be pruned and receive water..etc…

He let Israel be taken into captivity by Babylon.  He let it happen.
Hedges of protection
Walls (boundaries/safety)
Pruning
Water (refreshing thirst?)
Contrast Man's Futile Attempts: The ancient Chinese sought security from the barbaric hordes that swept down from the north, so they erected the Great Wall of China, which stretches for 1500 miles, is 12-40' wide and 20-50' high, too high for the enemy to scale, too thick to tear down, and too long to go around. Yet in the first 100 years of the wall's existence, China was invaded 3x. How was the security breached? The enemies simply bribed a gatekeeper and then marched easily through a gate. The fatal flaw in China's defense lay in spending its wealth to build a wall but paying much less to build the character of the gatekeepers. (cp Pr 14:34)
We can do our best to build our best kingdoms and even if we do a good job – God knows so much better.  It’s not always about the kingdom.  He cares more about our character than our safety.  In His name alone are we truly safe.
Deuteronomy 32:39 “‘See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand.
1 Samuel 2:6, 2 Kings 5:7, James 4:12

No one else has this ability to have control over our death and our life.
Repetition of I – highlights God’s sovereignty stressing God alone (no other gods (idols, culture, media, etc.) ego eimi
Death and Life
Wounding and healing
Deliverance
God is in control of our entire life…good and evil death and life woundings and healings etc…     ex.  John Piper’s message - God rules the world in such a way that all calamities and all sin remain in his ultimate control and therefore within his ultimate design and purpose.

1 Samuel 1:5-6 But to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the LORD had closed her womb. 6 And her rival used to provoke her grievously to irritate her, because the LORD had closed her womb.

He opens and closes wombs
Birth – babies/ the open and closing of wombs
Those 4 years of Joel’s death, many miscarriages, and finally Sophia being born was all ordained by God and although I can’t understand completely – I trust His Good Will
1 Samuel 2:6-10 The LORD kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. 7 The LORD makes poor and makes richhe brings low and he exalts. 8 He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and on them he has set the world. 9 “He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness, for not by might shall a man prevail. 10 The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; against them he will thunder in heaven. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed.”

He alone brings up and down, death and life, rich and poor, low and high, guards, cuts off, breaks to pieces, judges and gives strength, exalts

He does it…no one else.  NOT Fate or chance….
Our life
Our financial situations
Our status and positions
Our help to receive
He rules over the lives of the wicked as well as His own
Giver of strength and judger of all
The circumstances of life are not by chance or due to this or that …because I did this then this happened…is not the way to think because then I will think…if I just do this then this can happen…  (socercery/witchcraft)
---But the Lord does it…disciplines those he loves but we can rest in Him even in His discipline… not manipulate circumstances by my hand…just seek to obey and honor and glorify my God
Isaiah 45:6-7 that people may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is none besides me; I am the LORD, and there is no other. 7 I form light and create darkness, I make well-being and create calamity, I am the LORD, who does all these things.

There is NO other
He forms light and darkness (creates)
He makes well and creates calamity
He does all these things
Sicknesses and Healings and Peace
God causes well being
All Calamity
God creates disaster
When bad things happen I don’t have to feel out of control because I am in the good hands of the one who is in control.  He IS IN CONROL…  He does all these things.  Then why do I feel afraid?  He can turn any difficulty into an opportunity.
John 19:10-11 So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” 11 Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.”

He gives all authority – so every authority in our life is ordained by God.
All the authority and leadership in my life.  Both good and bad ones.
I don’t have to feel hopeless when there is bad authority because they will answer to Him.  When I don’t get my way I don’t have to turn my wheels…  I am called to be a joy and crown to my hubs and submit to elders…etc…

1.         How should this change my outlook in life?                                                                                      Isaiah 46:9,10  - God controls the future too
2.         How would I explain God’s sovereignty to another person (based on what I’ve learned HERE]?
3.         If you believe in God’s sovereignty, how would it change your thinking about your particular circumstance?

El Elyon - the strong strong one- the most high God 2/16

El Elyon – the strong strong one – the most high God. God is the strongest strong one…there is none that equal him.

Names of God are like an advent calendar – as you open more tabs, the image that lies underneath becomes more and more clear.

El Elyon used in scripture

Through scripture, we find that El Elyon is ruler of/defeats the following and they recognize God as El Elyon - God Most High

• Nations

• Spirits

• Kings of Earth

NATIONS

God is revealed as El Elyon as nations recognize Him as God Most High

In the Pentateuch (1st 5 books of the Bible), we find that this name of God (El Elyon) is used only 3 times.

• Genesis 14:19-20

- Abraham meets Melichizedek

- Lot is taken away. Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed

- Abram defeats county that others were not able to defeat

Vs. 19 You were able to defeat foreign nations with foreign gods because you have God Most High on your side.

- Abram tithes to Melichizedek, preist of El Elyon. King of Sodom tries to

give him stuff as well, but Abram will not take it because he has El Elyon

on his side.

• Numbers 24:16

- Has knowledge that God is God Most High

- Rejects all other authorities and what other people told him to do. Oracle became twisted and turns into Davidic prophecy – only happened because of his fear of God as El Elyon.

- Interesting Point: El Elyon used in contrast to heathen nations – when others are worshipping or praying to heathens. This was to signify God as God Most High – high above other gods.

• Deuteronomy 32:8-9

“When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he divided mankind, he fixed the borders of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God. But the Lord’s portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage.”

- In this verse, “sons of God” refers to fact that God had appointed angles

to rule/watch of specific, non-believing nations, but the Lord is ruler of

Israel – his nations/his children.

SPIRITS

God recognized as El Elyon by the spirits – even the demons recognize that there is no other…he’s the Most High God.

• Acts 16:16-17

- In these passages, a fortune telling girl, who had these abilities because

she was possessed by a demonic sprit, refers to God as God Most High.

• Mark 5:7

- Again, we see in this passage that a demon possessed man refers to

Jesus as Most High God.

The only one who can break through all barriers and authorities and is not limited to the physical world is God Most High.

The nations and demons are renewed in their image and perception of him. Taking this into account, where does God fall in your ladder of decision making?

Only when God is our first and final authority are we set free. We are in an unsafe place when we are in control because we don’t have the ability to see all that God sees. We cannot let our spirit be dismayed or put in despair as it is allowing the enemy to have a foothold on us – we are not letting God be sovereign…even is we say it, if we are not living it out, the God is not El Elyon of our hearts too.

KINGS OF EARTH

• Daniel 2:37, 47 (Nebuchadnezzar’s first dream)

- Daniel interprets Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. This dream sets the picture of

Nebuchadnezzar as high king.

- He is given a warning to obey…but we see that in the next part below

that he does not obey this warning.

• Daniel 4: 24-26(Nebuchadnezzar’s second dream)

- Daniel delivering the decree of El Elyon

- Again we see that the name of El Elyon is being used in the presence of heathens

- Saying that even Nebuchadnezzar has a God given purpose…God has

given everything to Nebuchadnezzar – if he doesn’t obey God, he will

become like the beasts of the field.

• Daniel 4:34-37

- The Kingdom of Babylon is a strong nation. Just by the walls surrounding

the kingdom we get a glimpse of this nation’s immensity and strength.

The walls were 312 feet tall (like a skyscraper)…at the top most part of

the wall, it was wide enough for 4 chariots to pass…and it had 250 watch

towers along the perimeter of the wall…it was an impregnable,

impenetrable tower. Compared to the name of the Lord as a strong

tower (Proverbs 18:10) – if the walls of the kingdom of Babylon were this

immense, how much stronger and confident can we be in the name of

our Lord who is a stongtower.

- In these verses, Nebuchadnezzar, who is not a Christian and not a God-

fearing man, acknowledging God as El Elyon

Through these series of verses, were able to see that God, El Elyon is ruler of nations, sprits, and kings of the earth. Everyone is under God’s authority and are only in control because God put them there…at any moment, God has complete authority and can take there power from them at any moment.

El Elyon - HW Sheet

Last night we looked up some verses in the Bible that use the name El Elyon.  Here are some of the notes from last night.

El means strong.  So El Elyon indicates the strongest strong one, the infinite, the possessor of the heaven and Earth and all that is in them.  Connotes a “victor” mentality (like Dagon who falls before the Ark of the Covenant).
Pentateuch uses of El Elyon (only 3 times, all in context of pagan nations - Heathens)
<!--[if !supportLists]-->1.       <!--[endif]-->Genesis 14:19-20* And he blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; 20 and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!”
4 kings make war, defeat Sodom & Gomorrah, then Abraham defeats them, King of Sodom comes….then stopped by Melchizedek, the priest of the Most High God.  Abraham pays his tithes to Melchizedek (who scholars would say is the pre-incarnate Christ), showing that Abraham acknowledges his defeat of the kings is not by his own strength.  He even rejects King of Sodom’s offer…  vs 21-24
<!--[if !supportLists]-->2.       <!--[endif]-->Numbers 24:16 - oracle of him who hears the words of God, and knows the knowledge of the Most High, who sees the vision of the Almighty, falling down with his eyes uncovered:
King Barak of Moab commands Balaam to curse Barak’s enemy (Israel), but Balaam does the opposite. (v. 17, 19) He has knowledge of the Most High God.  Another oracle starts the same as the others but it rapidly becomes a prophecy about the rise of the Davidic dynasty, which conquered the surrounding peoples, including Moab
<!--[if !supportLists]-->3.       <!--[endif]-->Deut 32:8 When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he divided mankind, he fixed the borders of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God.
From the Song of Moses –the Most High divided the earth & set the boundaries for all nations.  (According to the number of the sons of God may suggest that certain angels (“sons of God”; see Job 1:6) are responsible for specific nations, whereas the Lord himself cares for Israel.)
Note the progression in these 3 Pentateuch examples:
<!--[if !supportLists]-->1.       <!--[endif]-->the Most High is revealed to an individual (to Abraham, at a time when Abraham was just getting to know the Lord),
<!--[if !supportLists]-->2.      <!--[endif]-->then revealed as the ruler over Israel/Moab,
<!--[if !supportLists]-->3.      <!--[endif]-->and then as the ruler of all nations.
New Testament references to the Most High God, all in context of demons
<!--[if !supportLists]-->1.       <!--[endif]-->Acts 16:16–17 As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. 17 She followed Paul and us, crying out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.”
Context: first missionary journey to Europe (after God had stopped them from going into Asia in v. 7).  The slave girl who is possessed by demons & tells fortunes to make her masters money.  The first use in NT is the demons who knew who Jesus was.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->2.       <!--[endif]-->Mark 5:7  And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.”
In a gentile area, and here again, the unclean spirit identifies Jesus as the Son of the Most High God.
Note of encouragement: El Elyon has greater power than anything in the physical world.  See Ephesians 6 – He is the one who an cross over the boundaries that an break the powers of evil/darkness.  BUT we run into El Elyon.
He is the Possessor of Heaven and Earth – the Strongest Strong One.  Who is greater than the gods of all other nations.  He is greater than all demons and forces of darkness.  We need to be renewed in our mind – He an SET FREE.  He can see through the dark places in our lives.  We can’t let our spirit be dismayed because that is letting the enemy look greater than God.
Therefore, do not let your spirit become dismayed because El Elyon is greater than the source of dismay.  However, the implication is this: be prepared by knowing El Elyon, the ruler of heaven and heart, ruler of nations, ruler of demons.
Old Testament outside of the Pentateuch
<!--[if !supportLists]-->1.       <!--[endif]-->Isa 14:12–14  “How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low! 13 You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north; 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’
Satan wants to be like El Elyon, ruling nations.  He declares “I will” 5 times, see especially v. 14 “I will make myself like the Most High”  but God says Satan will be brought down to Shoel/hell (v. 15).  Note that hell was originally created to contain the fallen angel, Satan, and his minions, not for people.  El Elyon will defeat the spirit realm and the human realm that has rebelled against him.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->2.      <!--[endif]-->From the book of Daniel:
<!--[if !supportLists]-->a.        <!--[endif]-->Dan 2:37,47   vs. 37You, O king, the king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the power, and the might, and the glory,   vs 47  The king answered and said to Daniel, “Truly, your God is God of gods and Lord of kings, and a revealer of mysteries, for you have been able to reveal this mystery.”
Context: Daniel interprets Nebuchadnezzar’s first dream, about the image/statue that was topped with gold (representing the 1st empire Nebuchadnezzar was ruling, filled with fortune & great “success”) and deteriorated in layers going downward, until the bottom is described as a mixture of mere iron and clay (signifying sheer strength).
“You, O king, the king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the power, and the might, and the glory” (v. 37)  In other words, Nebuchadnezzar was merely a king under The King, a mighty earthly ruler, but one to whom *God* had given this kingdom.  God was responsible for his reign.
“The king answered and said to Daniel, “Truly, your God is God of gods and Lord of kings, and a revealer of mysteries, for you have been able to reveal this mystery.”  (v. 47)  Nebuchadnezzar sees that Daniels’ God is The King of kings, and God had to reveal even that to him.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->b.      <!--[endif]-->Daniel 4:24–26  this is the interpretation, O king: It is a decree of the Most High, which has come upon my lord the king, 25 that you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. You shall be made to eat grass like an ox, and you shall be wet with the dew of heaven, and seven periods of time shall pass over you, till you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will. 26 And as it was commanded to leave the stump of the roots of the tree, your kingdom shall be confirmed for you from the time that you know that Heaven rules. 27 Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you: break off your sins by practicing righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the oppressed, that there may perhaps be a lengthening of your prosperity.”  28 All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar. 29 At the end of twelve months he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, 30 and the king answered and said, “Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by my mighty power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?” 31While the words were still in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, “O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: The kingdom has departed from you, 32 and you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. And you shall be made to eat grass like an ox, and seven periods of time shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will.”
Context: Nebuchadnezzar’s second dream of the Great Tree, and Daniel is giving the interpretation.  “It is a decree of the Most High... that you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field... [until] you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will.”
In other words, God’s purposes for Nebuchadnezzar are for him to know that the Most High rules the kingdoms of men, and He gives those kingdoms to whomever He will.  Who’s in charge of the nations?  El Elyon
<!--[if !supportLists]-->c.       <!--[endif]-->Daniel 4:34–37  At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored him who lives forever,  for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation; 35 all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, “What have you done?” 36 At the same time my reason returned to me, and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and splendor returned to me. My counselors and my lords sought me, and I was established in my kingdom, and still more greatness was added to me. 37Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, for all his works are right and his ways are just; and those who walk in pride he is able to humble.
The kingdom of Babylon was an immense, walled kingdom with walls that were
<!--[if !supportLists]-->{     <!--[endif]-->312 feet tall and
<!--[if !supportLists]-->{     <!--[endif]-->4 chariots wide
<!--[if !supportLists]-->{     <!--[endif]-->with 250 towers that were 400 feet tall,
<!--[if !supportLists]-->{     <!--[endif]-->and complete with the Euphrates river as a water source.  Impregnable (unconquerable – strong enough to withhold any attack or force)
How do you bring the king of such a kingdom low?  He must become like an animal of the field.  (see dan 5) And in this way, God accomplished his purposes for Nebuchadnezzar—where he now proclaims praise & honor to the Most High.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->d.      <!--[endif]-->Daniel 5:18  O king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father kingship and greatness and glory and majesty. 19 And because of the greatness that he gave him, all peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him. Whom he would, he killed, and whom he would, he kept alive; whom he would, he raised up, and whom he would, he humbled. 20But when his heart was lifted up and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, he was brought down from his kingly throne, and his glory was taken from him. 21 He was driven from among the children of mankind, and his mind was made like that of a beast, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. He was fed grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, until he knew that the Most High God rules the kingdom of mankind and sets over it whom he will. 22 And you his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this,
Context: Belshazzar (Nebuchadnezzar’s grandson) clearly did not learn much from his grandfather’s experience (v. 1–4)  The invisible hand writes on the wall at the feast, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, and PARSIN.  (Numbered, numbered, weighed, and divided)
To summarize, El Elyon will defeat:
<!--[if !supportLists]-->·         <!--[endif]-->The nations (All of them)
<!--[if !supportLists]-->·         <!--[endif]-->The spirits (demons etc)
<!--[if !supportLists]-->·         <!--[endif]-->The kings of the earth

Everything in Heaven and on Earth is under the Most High God…

also ...next week we will be going over this chart that I gave for homework a couple weeks ago.
